An Amazing Rhine River cruise on Scenic This was an amazing experience. It was our first river cruise and Scenic really hit it out of the park! The boat was beautiful, crew did everything to make our experience memorable, dining was Michelin-star quality and service. Excursions each day were very interesting and well organized. We visited two of the great European cathedrals in Strasbourg and Cologne, spent a morning basking in a spa at Baden Baden, and toured a 9th generation winery along the Moselle river. A highlight was a series of four talks by historian and author Robert Watson. He was very interesting and engaging. If we take another river cruise, it will definitely be on Scenic, and we would highly recommend this line and this cruise.

Cairo in 2 days - experience for a lifetime We booked a 2 days private trip to see the highlights of Cairo, and we could see all the important sites without hurry. Mahmoud, our guide was telling all the historical details, he is very professional in egyptian history and he was very kind and friendly. Big plus that he also offered us a drink one day, and a tea on the other. The only negative experience was that we were forced to visit some shops to buy things (papyrus, parfume, souvenir), and we felt like that we have to buy something in order not to be considered rude. I would suggest to focus on the historical parts and dont involve clients in such awkward situations. Apart from this the 2 days were 10/10.

Before You Book

The questions travelers ask most before their first trip to Egypt.

How many days in Cairo is enough?

Typically, 3 to 4 days in Cairo is enough to explore the main attractions, such as the Pyramids of Giza, the Egyptian Museum, and Coptic Cairo. If you want to dive deeper into local culture or visit nearby sites like Saqqara or Luxor, consider extending your stay to 5 days. This allows for a more relaxed experience without feeling rushed.

What is typically included in a standard Cairo day tour?

Most classic Cairo day tours include a licensed, English-speaking Egyptologist guide, private air-conditioned transportation, and hotel pickup and drop-off. Depending on the itinerary, tours usually cover the Giza Pyramids, the Sphinx, and the Egyptian Museum or the new Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM). Always check if entry tickets and lunch are included, as many budget tours exclude monument fees to keep upfront costs lower.

How many days do I need for a complete Cairo tour experience?

To comfortably see Cairo’s main highlights, a 2 to 3-day tour is ideal.

  • Day 1: The Giza Plateau (Pyramids & Sphinx) and Saqqara.
  • Day 2: The Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) or Egyptian Museum at Tahrir Square, followed by the Citadel of Saladin.
  • Day 3: Coptic Cairo, Islamic Cairo, and shopping at the historic Khan El Khalili bazaar.

Is it better to book a private tour or a group tour in Cairo?

Private tours are highly recommended for Cairo due to the city’s heavy traffic and the vast layout of archaeological sites. A private tour allows you to customize your itinerary, move at your own pace, and receive one-on-one insights from your guide. Group tours are more budget-friendly but operate on rigid schedules and require waiting for large parties at every stop.

What should I wear on a Cairo tour?

There is no official dress code, but Egypt is a conservative country, and dressing modestly is highly recommended. For comfort and respect, wear lightweight, breathable fabrics (such as cotton or linen) that cover your shoulders and knees. Comfortable, closed-toe walking shoes are essential for navigating the dusty, uneven terrain of the pyramids and markets. Women should bring a lightweight scarf to cover their heads if the tour includes active mosques.

Can a Cairo tour take me to see the new Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM)?

Yes, most modern Cairo tour itineraries now offer visits to the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM). While the museum has transitioned through limited soft-opening phases, visitors can tour the majestic Grand Hall, the Grand Staircase, and commercial areas. Ensure you clarify with your tour operator whether your booking includes the main gallery spaces or restricted-access zones, as ticketing requirements vary depending on the current operational phase.

What not to wear in Cairo?

Avoid wearing revealing or overly casual clothing in public, especially in religious or traditional areas. Women should avoid wearing short skirts, low-cut tops, or sleeveless dresses when visiting places like mosques. Men should refrain from wearing shorts when touring temples or religious sites. Comfortable but modest clothing is the key to blending in while staying respectful.

What is considered rude in Egypt?

  • Pointing at someone with your finger is considered rude and disrespectful.
  • Using your left hand for greetings, eating, or handing something over is seen as impolite. In Egypt, the left hand is traditionally associated with less clean tasks.
  • Disrespecting elders or interrupting conversations is also seen as disrespectful.

What not to do in Egypt as a woman?

Avoid wearing revealing clothing, especially in rural areas or when visiting religious sites.

  • Don’t walk alone late at night in unfamiliar or poorly lit areas. It’s best to travel with a group or hire a trusted guide or driver.
  • Don’t engage in public displays of affection with men. It’s considered inappropriate and could lead to unwanted attention.

By understanding these cultural nuances, you’ll ensure a respectful, enjoyable, and unforgettable experience during your time in Cairo and Egypt.

Essential Travel Tips for Cairo

🌡️ Explore Early to Avoid the Heat

Cairo can be extremely hot, especially from May to September when temperatures often exceed 35°C (95°F). Visit major attractions like the Giza Pyramid Complex early in the morning for cooler weather, better photos, and fewer crowds.

🧴 Sun Protection Is Essential

Many of Cairo’s top attractions involve spending time outdoors with limited shade. Pack sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat when visiting archaeological sites, walking tours, or day trips to the desert.

💵 Keep Small Egyptian Pound Notes Handy

While hotels, restaurants, and shopping malls often accept cards, cash is useful for taxis, local cafés, markets, and small purchases. Having small denominations makes everyday transactions much easier.

🚦 Allow Extra Time for Traffic

Cairo is famous for its traffic congestion. What looks like a short journey on the map can take much longer during rush hours. Plan extra travel time when heading to airports, museums, or guided tours.

🕌 Dress Modestly When Visiting Religious Sites

When visiting historic mosques such as Mosque of Muhammad Ali or exploring Islamic Cairo, wear clothing that covers shoulders and knees. Women may wish to carry a light scarf for mosque visits.

💧 Stay Hydrated Throughout the Day

The combination of heat, walking, and sightseeing can be exhausting. Carry a reusable water bottle and drink regularly, especially when exploring outdoor sites like the pyramids, markets, and historic districts.

🎒 Wear Comfortable Walking Shoes

Many of Cairo’s most rewarding experiences involve walking through museums, bazaars, and historic neighborhoods. Comfortable footwear is essential for navigating uneven streets and large archaeological sites.

📸 Visit Khan El Khalili in the Evening

The famous Khan el-Khalili bazaar comes alive after sunset. Cooler temperatures, lively cafés, and illuminated streets create a more enjoyable atmosphere for shopping and exploring.

🏛️ Set Aside Plenty of Time for the Museums

Cairo’s museums contain thousands of artifacts spanning thousands of years of history. Allow several hours to fully appreciate collections at the Grand Egyptian Museum or the historic museums in the city center.
